ПЕСЕНКА ШАЛТАЯ-БОЛТАЯ
Зимой, на зависть соловью,
Для вас я песенку спою.
Весной, под птичий свист и гам,
Слова я растолкую вам.
Когда же солнце припечёт,
Их тайный смысл до вас дойдёт,
А осенью, чтоб не скучать,
Не грех бы вам их записать.
В письме я рыбкам подал знак:
"Мне хочется, чтоб стало так..."
Ответ явился мне в пруду:
"Сэр, Вам отказано, ввиду..."
Я снова обратился к ним:
"Прошу Вас внять словам моим".
Но дерзок был ответа тон:
"Не лезьте, Сэр, из кожи вон!"
Я слал им письма много раз,
Но получал всегда отказ.
Тогда достал я котелок
И перец в ступке истолок.
В груди моей огонь пылал,
Когда я воду наливал.
И вот мне Некто говорит:
"Сейчас в пруду вся рыба спит".
Я приказал ему: "Иди
И рыбу мигом разбуди!"
Я повторил приказ опять,
Я в ухо стал ему кричать.
Но был он чопорен и сух:
"Сэр, не кричите, я не глух".
Но сух и чопорен он был;
"Я б,может, их и разбудил..."
Схватил я штопор, зол и лют,
И сам отправился на пруд.
Но прочен был запор в дверях:
Я - дёрг, я - толк, я - трах, я - бах!..
Но крепок был железный крюк,
Я ручку повернул, и вдруг...
Последовало долгое молчание.
– И это всё? – робко спросила Алиса.
– Это всё, – ответил Шалтай-Болтай. До свидания.

Then some one came to me and said,
"The little fishes are in bed."
I said to him, I said it plain,
"Then you must wake them up again."
I said it very loud and clear;
I went and shouted in his ear.'
`But he was very stiff and proud;
He said "You needn't shout so loud!"
And he was very proud and stiff;
He said "I'd go and wake them, if -- "
I took a corkscrew from the shelf:
I went to wake them up myself.
And when I found the door was locked,
I pulled and pushed and knocked.
And when I found the door was shut,
I tried to turn the handle, but -- '
There was a long pause.
`Is that all?' Alice timidly asked.
