Прекрасный лик блеснул мне из окна;

Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928)

THE FEAR OF DEATH.

1 Beneath her window in the cool, calm night,
2 I stood and made as though I would have sung,
3 Being full of life and confident and young,
4 And dreaming only of my love's delight;
5 Then suddenly I saw the glooms divide,
6 And gliding from the darkest cypress--tree
7 Death came, white--boned, and snatcht my lute from me,
8 And sat himself, grimacing, by my side.
9 Just then, as when the golden moon looks down
10 On starless waters from a stony sky,
11 My love's fair face shone out above on high;
12 Whereat I, fearing nothing of Death's frown,
13 Turned smiling to salute her lovely head,
14 And when I turned again, lo! Death had fled!
