The Stormy Sea...

Ãàâðèèë Èâàíè÷åíêî
Has swum away in stormy sea the bather,
His comrade dared to swim with him together…
They argued - that on sea-space the wave
Wouldn’t carry them from coast away…

By jerk they passed the coasting wave –
They smashed the coast of wave for wave…
The pebbles with boulders… Herbs of Sea…
And stones beat coast as hammer, You see!

They lucky were – all blows passed by…
And having doved under wave, went forward…
The Strike! The Strike - relentlessly onward …
On beach the folk - delights and wonders …Why?!

The Lifeguard vain in megaphone appeal:
"The Boys! It’s Storm!! Returne! It’s real!”
But such attention their excitement rise…
They want the folk have much surprise…

To swim onward – is easy and perfectly!
And quickly waves carry them straight on…
But it’s beyond the understanding, really -
What will the boys do - to returne?

They swim onward, and now cape is reached…
But suddenly severe wind has jerked…
And spume of waves has covered heads – was so,
That Northen Wind began so suddenly to blow…

And it remained to swim on wind’s will –
No chance to overcome the stormy will!
They over looked– a coast is fare behind…
To shore?! But have they time to hide ?!

Ashore - the lifeguard rushes there about…
It’s storm! And glider cann’t be launched !
Around him - of idlers fussing crowd…
And each of them a good advise has found…

On beach the idlers have observed,
As there, near skyline in blue haze -
There pair of heads among the waves…
Severe wind to open sea them carried …

But now the swimmers understood the sea –
As vain and useless was then their dispute…
In spite they wanted stay in stormy sea …
And empty was the talk…They could that see…

For time they were by current quickly carried…
And tried to swim and used all their strength…
So were exhausted power, patience, faith…
But then Neptune at once by spit them stopped…

The waves on spit were beating mighty rocks –
Entire clifs, spume, breakers and the stones …
The lads had tried, they grapped for rocks…
They had the chance to save - to get on coast …

The supreme effort – and they got the cliffs…
And crawled on stones and on soggy sand …
The crowd of idlers trampled there on land –
Nobody able was for rescue to save the lads…
