A fish will get out of a fish
and a bird will get out of a bird,
but a man will stay within a man,
tied with a silver cord.
The old fish will crumble and the new one will swim,
the old bird will rot and the new one will soar,
but the old man will cling to the new man,
as more new men fall through the hingeless door.
Like captives, they will pile up inside,
their throats choked by the silver cord,
till the old man destroys enough of them
to be again like a fish or a bird.
