The Farmer and the Mule
To guard his summer garden plot,
The Farmer hired the Mule
To chase the sparrows, crows, and all that pesky lot.
The Mule was of most honest rule:
Not known to be a predator, nor thief,
He would not touch the owner’s single leaf,
And it's unfair to say he showed those birds some favor;
But for the Farmer, profits from the plot were low:
The Mule, while chasing birds as fast as he could go,
And stomping back and forth on every shrub and row,
Was jumping with such fervor
That he had ruined the whole garden, all as one.
The Farmer, witnessing his enterprise begone,
Beat every penny of his business wreck
Out of the Mule’s poor back.
“There, on with it!” – they yell – “The beast will get his due!
Who, with no clue,
Would take on such a deal?”

Not to defend the Mule, I’m going to appeal:
He’s guilty without fail (and fired by the rule),
But, seems to me, he also is a fool
Who lets his garden plot be guarded by the Mule.

Наняв Осла, приставил
Ворон и воробьёв гонять нахальный род.
Осёл был самых честных правил:
Ни с хищностью, ни с кражей незнаком,
Не поживился он хозяйским ни листком
И птицам, грех сказать, чтобы давал потачку;
Но Мужику барыш был с огорода плох.
Осёл, гоняя птиц, со всех ослиных ног,
По всем грядам и вдоль и поперёк
Такую поднял скачку,
Что в огороде всё примял и притоптал.
Увидя тут, что труд его пропал,
Крестьянин на спине ослиной
Убыток выместил дубиной.
«И ништо! — все кричат, — скотине поделом!
С его ль умом
За это дело браться?»

А я скажу, не с тем, чтоб за Осла вступаться;
Он, точно, виноват (с ним сделан и расчет),
Но, кажется, не прав и тот,
Кто поручил Ослу стеречь свой огород.
