Когда смотрю я, как богато
Блестят жемчужины и злато
На одеяньях дорогих,
Мне видится проказа в них:
Испорчен, - утверждать я смею, -
Наряд ваш, заражённый ею.
Увы, в помпезных платьях тех
Скрывается бесстыдства грех;
Не в злате ходит добродетель –
В простой одежде, - я свидетель.

1010. Leprosie in Cloathes
When flowing garments I behold
Inspired with Purple, Pearle, and Gold;
I think no other but I see
In them a glorious leprosie
That do's infect, and make the rent
More mortall in the vestiment.
As flowrie vestures doe descrie
The wearers rich immodestie;
So plaine and simple cloathes doe show
Where virtue walkes, not those that flow.
