Eel in Mountain Pool

Jena Woodhouse
The mountain smoulders.
Woodsmoke distils sunlight
into billy tea;

through funnelled rock
deep in the gorge, creek-
water chatters aimlessly;

treeferns uncurl
clubbed fists of a foetus
above granite boulders;

blue wrens in lantana flare
like sparks in kerosene;
ancient wily eel in mountain
pool is fattening on time.
