Where pain comes from

Ìàðèÿ Êèëüäèáåêîâà
It happens like this:
Smacking your thumb with a hammer
and swirling around and around
in place from the pain.

Its really hurts.
It hurts, but not too much.
This pain isn’t quite it

Sometimes it goes like this:
Your girlfriend bites your dick off,
you bring it in a jar to the doctor,
passing out on the way there.

Well, sure it hurts.
It hurts, but not too much.
This pain isn’t quite it.

It happens very often:
Slaving away and working for nothing,
and money never seems to be enough-
They say "Its just a crisis",
don’t trust em’!

It hurts but not too much.
This pain isn’t quite it.

It happens,
When you return from a night job –
the house and wife are gone,
But you see in a pit
scraps of the drapes, lock  of hair…

At the homeless shelter they give
You a bowl and spoon.

Its all painful,
Its painful, but you can put up with it…
Especially up until dark and to the
Sound of the phrase ‘This too shall pass’.

It happens like this:
They order the people
to take only one bag with them on board.
They burn your kindergarten alphabet book, a candle,
And mother's dress.
This is what pain is.

But I’ve seen those who
Have taken this kind of pain with a
Slight suspicious grin.

What is this ‘pain’?
Oh, nothing is painful
To the point of death,
Hell and damnation.

And if its like this,
Then why I am anxious for life
 in this insignificant body,
Turning down the experience of the spirit,
Which had left so many lives,

when it didn’t yet understand the
pleasant and calm pain, but pain?
