A Place Apart

Such blueness as the mind can't fathom:
the Great Physician, dreaming;
sea-urchins like limpet-mines
clamped to the turquoise inlet's rim -
spines to penetrate soft flesh
reminders of the lethal arts,
the Great Mortician's tiny barbs,
lest we forget..............

Where mountains girdle and protect
the inlet's iridescent neck
encircled by black urchins, crimson shells,
wild goats in the pass stand guard,
Pan's shaggy kinsmen, topaz-eyed,
adorned with bells, admitting only
creatures seeking sanctuary.........

"Beware the siren-tree," a local legend
warns the guest. "Sleep under
a singing pine beside this sea, and lose
your mind." They say the pine-tree madness
is the sweetest kind................
