A Letter

Âëàäèìèð Çàáåëèí
I’m sorry that so far from you I am,
But with the distance nothing I can do.
You have to know you are my dearest gem;
You have to know that I still love you, too.
Now it’s the night and there’s the moon in sky.
The storm is on, and I can hear its noise.
Oh, why just in my dreams I see you nigh?
And why just in my dreams I hear your voice?
The wind outside is felling down the trees,
Is howling up and cooling up my blood.
The rain is on and on and plus to this
I am afraid there soon will be a flood.
D’you know, there're many things just now I’ve learnt.
Now I know much of what I never knew.
And yesterday the letters I have burnt –
The ones I wrote but didn’t send to you.
Before that day I carefully kept them.
You ask me why? Well, I don’t know myself.
May be they proved me that my love’s not sham,
And so for months were lying on my shelf.
D’you know, this morning I could write no word.
I longed to write to you and I could not.
May be my love is dying? Oh, my Lord!
I won’t believe the dying love’s my lot!
I don’t believe it, darling, for then why
D’I write this letter? Say me why on earth
Do every night I look up at the sky
To see the stars – the stars of white cold North?
Can say you why d’I do this: for I know
The stars, the same as here, you see them, too.
And they become so own to me as though
Each one of them is nothing else but you.
My pain’s calmed down, I can't but say of it.
Sometimes I think without you I can live.
This’s ‘cause I’d to forget about my needs,
But really this long parting makes me grieve.
The distance is just what’s between us now.
It can seem to be funny. ‘Tis not so.
I have to win the doom. I don’t know how,
But I’ve to do it, though it’s hard, I know.
The morning’s falling. Here I have to end.
The sun is taking its place in the sky.
The God is great, and all is in His hands.
I love you, honey. Wait for me. Good-bye.
