Christmas Story

Someone very quiet once lived here.  This small crooked hut was standing on the very edge of the village.  Its rotten logs were ancient and black from hundreds of rains, snows, and plants.  Its windows were like two scary holes filled with cold blackness.  However, the door was always closed, even the persistent attempts of the wind were not able to destroy it or blow it away.  Actually, there was nothing special in this wooden wreck except for one curious detail.  Although, many people throughout the year passed by this hut, peeping once in a while into the glassless windows. Nothing happened —old, wet furniture could be seen from the outside.  Probably, it was a perfect apartment for bats, especially at night.

It would have been quite logical and reasonable to destroy this useless frightening building, but for one reason people preferred to keep it as a legend, kind of a unique rarity.  The point was that every Christmas this house was brought to life by some unknown powers…

Once one of the inhabitants of the village came out of his house for a while on the Christmas eve to enjoy the frosty air and a starry sky.  In the distance he saw a strange light.  He knew that there were no houses that far, so the curious man decided to check what it could be.  He walked and walked until he finally reached the end of the village.  What he saw was unbelievable.

There was no old, rotten and unfriendly hut.  Instead, the man saw a pretty old-fashioned house, all in bright Christmas decorations and in a funny snow hat.  The astonished man tried to come closer…  but a weird thing happened.  Despite his attempts to approach the house, it always remained in some distance away!

Finally the puzzled man gave up and just stared.  The smoke was coming out of the chimney, some dressed up adults and a couple of kids were moving inside, dancing and apparently playing some fun game.  The lights on the Christmas tree were burning in red, blue, yellow, green, purple and other colors.  And the cozy tiny windows were decorated with graceful frost ornaments.  It was a house directly from a magic fairy tale!..

The man ran home and brought his family and some of the neighbors back to look at the unusual miracle.  In a little while the whole village gathered around the wonderful house, although no one was still able to come close.  This house was like a pattern from another time, protected by thick strong covers of years and space…

Since then, it happened every Christmas.  Generations changed in the village, people came and left, but the magic Christmas house was brought to life every year without exception.
