In early light

Jena Woodhouse
Places appear magical
in early light:
take these smug
suburban houses,
snug in their estate,
silver skeins of river dreaming
fleeting in their eyes,
the floating world of mangroves
faintly misty on the other side,
masked herons, rigid for the kill,
javelin beaks poised to strike,
the river shimmering
like spools of bird call,
liquefied...
