Sweltering

Jena Woodhouse
Seek the hat brim: Panama,
akubra, almost anything
that shields the face
and naked skin from ravages
of stalking sun; seek awnings
and verandas to assuage
the need for soothing cool,
projecting rims that offer
an obscuring pool, oasis,
umbra; foliage of camphor laurel,
weeping fig, whose canopies
convert brute rays to channels
of green blood, a breathing,
weaving hood of chlorophyll
replenishing the aquifers of shade.
