The fairest thing

The fairest thing

'Some say the fairest thing upon the dark earth
is a host of horsemen, and some say
a cohort of foot-soldiers; yet others,
a fleet of ships...'*

For me, it is the vision of my daughter
in her bridal gown, gliding
from the dim green aisle of trees and fern,
three little girls in filmy robes
and one small boy preceding her
as a bee and butterflies
might cluster round a rose;
and then again, it is those children
dancing at her wedding:
Evie a white dove that skims
ecstatically above the lawn,
Sidney gambolling beside her,
pied goat-kid or agile faun,
emanating young, pure energy
and joy of living.
Hope and Lila, hair spun
out of moonbeams, starry eyes entranced
by glamour and romance,
complete the captivating ring
circling the evening of the wedding
on angelic feet...
