Раз Кот и Лиса, исчерпав всякий вздор,
О судьбах народов вели разговор
И в этих беседах – посредством индукции –
Пришли к заключенью: грядут революции.
Сказала Лиса: «Да, такое возможно,
Но что до меня – я всегда осторожна
И тысячу планов на случай беды
Имею, чтоб выйти сухой из воды.»
«Есть план у меня, - молвил Кот, - но один,
И, если он лопнет, не знать мне седин;
От недруга лучшей защиты не сыщешь,
Чем дуб пораскидистее и повыше.»
«Неважный проект,» - молвил Райнеке-Лис.
«Спасайся! – Кот крикнул. – Враги уже близ…»
Тотчас припустили, спасая живот:
Лиса – к своим планам, на дерево – Кот.
Прожекты Лису не спасли – сущий вздор,
А Кот схоронился и жив до сих пор.

THE CAT AND THE FOX
Jefferys Tailor
A Cat and a Fox held a long consultation
Concerning the times, and the state of the nation;
When the aspect of things led them both to infer
That a grand revolution must shortly occur.
Said the Fox, "For my country, it is that I fear,
For, as to myself, I can always get clear;
I have not, at present, much reason to fret,
For I've got a thousand new schemes for them yet."
"Indeed!" said the Cat; "as for me, I've but one,
And if that should fail I'm for ever undone,
The only protection remaining for me,
When the enemy comes, I must find in a tree."
"A very poor prospect," said Reynard, "I trow."
"But see!” said the Cat, "they're approaching us now!"
Then each to his mode of escaping betook,
The Fox to his schemes, and the Cat to an oak,
Who found in the tree she could safely remain;
While the Fox with his thousand manoeuvres was slain.

Hence it needs must appear, that when danger is near,
Cunning folks are not cunning enough;
And that persons who boast of their cleverness most
Fare the worst when its put to the proof.
