what do I have

What do I have
        that you could want?
        You want no wanting...

What do I have
        that you could need?
        You swim away from needing...

You set the rules,
        but rules get stale
        when comes the time to take a turn;

you navigate so cautiously
        that you may not be struck
        with sudden revelation;

you hurry back
        when least expected,
        so ardent and persistent.

But how limited our budget!
        We've become
        the minimalists of expression,

so careful to not disturb
        the thoughts too sharp
        the feelings too ambitious.

You taught me to admire you,
        to say good-bye,
        to ask and wait for nothing,


                but

             I want to give.
