It was not exactly the play of blood
or lead hardening in her thin fingertips,
But she frowns her eyebrow in the shape of arc
Then she laughs with her hoyden lips.
She`s as clever as Gertrude Stein herself
Like this poem she could be sung by the jazz.
Sharing secrets still is not in our plans
We will keep them for ourselves.
I will rally thoughts and deny to booze.
University and career growth...
And my yawning voice on the phone at night,
Will be flirting and uncouth.
Like old cognac her stiff look is transparent,
It's as friendly as grenade cup discharge.
If just something will be a little bit aslant
I`m afraid, she will play dead march.
Well, her features beam the unearthy blues
Or the bosa nove when she is drunk
If one day in love for her I`ll be accused–
It will be my total flunk.
I am afraid to be late for taking paints
To do something good, something leaving mark.
Like the searchlight of the aircraft defence
Radiates she stubborn light.
This light will forbid you to fall asleep
It will leave no chance to justify.
But instead her wise brown eye-beam
Roots of matter will testify.

И не то чтоб прямо играла кровь
Или в пальцах затвердевал свинец,
Но она дугой выгибает бровь
И смеется, как сорванец.
Да еще умна, как Гертруда Стайн,
И поется джазом, как этот стих.
Но у нас не будет с ней общих тайн –
Мы останемся при своих.
Я устану пить и возьмусь за ум,
Университет и карьерный рост,
И мой голос в трубке, зевая к двум,
Будет с нею игрив и прост.
Ведь прозрачен взор ее как коньяк
И приветлив, словно гранатомет –
Так что если что-то пойдет не так,
То она, боюсь, не поймет.
Да, ее черты излучают блюз
Или босса-нову, когда пьяна;
Если я случайно в нее влюблюсь –
Это будет моя вина.
Я боюсь совсем не успеть того,
Что имеет вес и оставит след,
А она прожектором ПВО
Излучает упрямый свет.
Этот свет совсем не дает уснуть,
Не дает себя оправдать ни в чем,
Но зато он целится прямо в суть
Кареглазым своим лучом.
