Ненужные создания – мужчины,
Как хорошо без них, но где причины
Покорности сей жалкой, злобный век
Терзает женщин тех, что грешность нег
И красоту стремились им отдать,
Чтоб те могли в унынии страдать,
Смиренно ожидая благодать.
Бегут к Пелл Мелл, к театру иль гостиной
Красотки их, как гончие долиной,
Затем домой с покупкой магазинной.
Какой-то тип свершает променад,
Высокомерный и притворный зад:
Толкая локтем спутника-спесивца
Кричит, мой Бог, как хороша девица,
Стройна, красива, чистый свежий рот,
Безвкусием пусть месяц поживёт,
Потрачусь я, но покажу из мести
Её презренье к лучшему и чести,
У падших жён одна судьба для всех,
Сначала гордость, после жалкий грех.
Чем выносить насмешки, лучше дома
Запрусь я, ублажив свою истому,
Верну любовь простую прежних дней
В печальных песнях, вспомнив и о ней,
О Даме, что в ту ночь одна ложилась,
Когда несчастный Рыцарь впал в немилость.
Пока жена отлёживает зад,
Муж отдал б…и женин весь наряд,
Что смотрится на девке благородно,
Из деспотии стала власть народной.
В конце концов, вы видите, мы правы,
Что естество потешить можно, право,
И без мужчин-скотов, самих себя
И услаждая славно, и любя.
Поэтому, о дамы городские,
Узнайте восхищения мужские,
Мы думаем, сказать уже пора,
Как платье их, они все – мишура.
Их скверна не позволит посмотреть
На них, как на людей достойных впредь.
Мы не такие, в нас ведь нет обмана,
Как в молодых хлыщах, что постоянно
Бесчестят вас: любите, мол, актёра;
Мы не хотим вам этого позора.
Не лицедей приятен, только роль:
Ролло - по нраву, презрен Харт настоль;
Приходите вы в театры, словно в храмы,
Где страсти обучаются все дамы,
А дома вы исполнить всё должны;
Здесь так же, как в местах, где болтуны
Грех громко осуждают и папистов.
А взять отшельников и атеистов,
Дела их лестны, если б каждый смог
Жить так, как нам они дают урок.
И оба есть…

What vain unnecessary things are men
How well we do without ’em, tell me then
Whence comes that mean submissiveness we find
This ill-bred age has wrought on womankind
Fall’n from the rights their sex and beauties gave 5
To make men wish despair and humbly crave
Now ’twill suffice if they vouchsafe to have.
To the Pall Mall,° Playhouse and the drawing room
Their Women Fairs, these Women Coursers° come
To chaffer, choose, and ride their bargains home, 10
At the appearance of an unknown face
Up steps the Arrogant pretending ass,
Pulling by th’elbow his companion Huff°
Cries Look, de God that wench is well enough
Faire and well shaped, good Lips and teeth twill do 15
She shall be Tawdry° for a month or two
At my expense, be rude and take upon her
Shew her contempt of quality and honour
And with the general fate of errant Women
Be very proud awhile, then very Common 20
E’re bear this scorn, I’d be shut up at home
Content with humoring my self alone,
Force back the Humble Love of former days
In pensive madrigals and ends of plays
When if my Lady frowned th’unhappy Knight 25
Was fain to fast and lie alone that night
But whilst th’insulting wife the Breeches wore
The Husband took her clothes to give his whore
Who now maintains it with a gentler art
Thus Tyrannies to Commonwealths Convert, 30
Then after all you find what ere we say
Things must go on in their Lewd natural way
Besides the Beastly men we to of ’n see
Can Please themselves alone as well as we
Therefore kind Ladies of the town to you 35
For our stol’n-ravished men we hereby sue
By this time you have found out we suppose
That they’re as Errant° Tinsel° as their Clothes
Poor broken Properties that cannot serve
To treat such persons so as they deserve 40
Mistake us not, we do not here pretend
That like your young sparks° you can condescend
To Love a beastly playhouse Creature, Foe
