Зависть стариков
Старики хотят быть молодыми, а они не молоды,
и они терзаются этим, им больно видеть юнцов
и они не могут сдержать своего желания отравить им жизнь.
Старики говорят себе: какие мы старики?
Мы не собираемся стареть, не собираемся умирать,
мы собираемся быть еще, и еще, и еще, и еще
и заставлять молодых считаться с нами,
пока они не состарятся. Мы сильнее юных.
В нас больше энергии, мы яростней цепляемся за жизнь.
Мы должны торжествовать, а молодые – прозябать
в своей жалкой незрелости.
Ведь мы моложе, чем молодые, и можем бросить тень на их юность.
И это правда.
И они так и делают.
И конца этому нет.

The Grudge of the Old
The old ones want to be young, and they aren’t young,
and it rankles, they ache when they see young,
and they can’t help wanting to spite it on them venomously.
The old ones say to themselves: We are not to be old,
we are not going to make way, we are not going to die,
we are going to stay on and on and on and on
and make the young look after us
till they are old. We are stronger then the young.
We are more energy, and our grip on life is harder.
Let us triumph, and let the young be listless
with they puny youth.
We are younger even now then the young, we can put they youth in the shade.
And it is true.
And they do it.
And so it goes on.
