To Chaadaev

Lxe
By love, by dream, by quiet glory
We haven't been enchanted long,
Our springtime's entertaining story
Dissolved like mist in sunlight strong;

But still we nurture the desire,
And under rulers' fatal press
We still impatiently confess
The call of homeland we admire.

Each day as new day we aspire
The dawn of Liberty to rise,
Like lover suffers in the ties
Of unrequited passion's fire.

As long as hearts are set to fledge,
As long as Honor draws us whole,
My friend, to homeland let us pledge
The best and youngest drives of soul.

Do doubt not the star will light
Of captivating celebration
And Russia waken from its blight,
And names of ours will the nation
On wrecks of monarchy handwrite!
