A Little Silver Button
It lay beside the road,
Just starting to corrode:
A little silver button,
Obscure in the dust,
Until young pioneers -
The leader and his peers –
With songs of happy childhood
One day went marching past.
The youngest pioneer
Was bringing up the rear
And spotted something shiny
With quick and eager eyes.
The brightest of his betters,
He saw some foreign letters,
Picked up the little button -
And read the words “Levi’s”.
Each pioneer knows:
The border’s very close.
“Who brought this alien object
To our collective farm?”
The children all together
Took off light as a feather
To warn frontier soldiers
And sound the alarm.
The colonel at the border
Gave troops an urgent order
And sent around this message
In most secret code:
Protect the Soviet nation
And scout the location
Where that suspicious button
Was found by the road.
For days in search of traitors,
And border perpetrators
The troops at the frontier
Remained on the alert.
While out reconnoitering
They saw a stranger loitering,
And glimpsed under his vatnik
The Grateful Dead t-shirt.
His teeth had white enamel,
He lighted up a Camel.
There was a button missing
From his destructed jeans.
And deep inside his pocket
They found a hidden rocket,
Plus plans to poison vodka
And polio vaccines!
All enemies can trust us
To guard this land of justice.
Our sunshine is the warmest,
Our sky is ever blue!
That’s how the story ended:
The spy was apprehended,
A little silver button
Brought down a major coup!
