Любовь моя, мне ночью не спалось,
Внезапно сердце сжалось от тоски,
Его щемящей жалости тиски
Сжимают. Всё во мне оборвалось...
На лестнице я слышу звук шагов,
Доносится негромкий разговор -
Судьбы неумолимый приговор,
И я в него уверовать готов.
Улавливает трепетный мой слух
Среди увядших листьев ветра стон,
Печальный, словно в нём смятенный дух
Томится. И поведать тщится он,
Что радости моей огонь потух ...
Что милая уснула вечным сном ...

Than when at night some wandering spirit grieves;
And as I heard, I thought: for her alone
Can be this sigh, which Nature suddenly heaves:
What if her soul to Heaven's gate had flown?
