A Matter of Fun and Money

Николай Жданов-Луценко
As you go down the hill, evaluating
The wisdom and mistakes of distance run,
You come to understand that boose and dating
Do not exhaust diversity of fun.

As you get rich, becoming soft and tender,
You realize that money’s not the prize,
That to survive you’re ready to surrender
And treason is no longer a surprise.

As you grow old, your thirst for fresher juices
Prevails over the law and common sense.
You’re letting loose the devil who seduces
A chance into becoming circumstance.

You’re seeking more for less to cut expenses,
The immortality without pain.
You bet and lose – to keep on taking chances
And never do confess there is no gain.

You always keep an eye on fun and money,
Neglecting holy essence of your soul.
But final revelation won’t be funny –
Your life was wasted with no higher goal.

…But then again you look into your pocket
And comprehend what gives you cheer and drive.
A dead mobile is longing for a socket
To keep the goddamn battery alive…
