ìîëîäîé ÷åëîâåê â êåïêå íàäåòîé çàäîì íàïåð¸ä
ïîäîø¸ë íà ñêà÷êàõ êî ìíå
è ñïðîñèë: "êòî âàì
íðàâèòñÿ?" è ÿ îòâåòèë:
"íåóæòî íå çíàåøü ÷òî êîãäà òû ãîâîðèøü êîìó-òî åù¸ ïðî ñâîþ
ëîøàäü òî îíà íå
áåæèò?"
îí ïîâ¸ë ñåáÿ òàê áóäòî áû íè÷åãî íå
ñëûøàë: "êòî âàì íðàâèòñÿ èç
ôàâîðèòîâ?"
"ôàâîðèòû ìíå íåèçâåñòíû" - ñêàçàë ÿ.
"ïî÷åìó?" - ñïðîñèë
îí.
"ïîòîìó ÷òî îíè çàáèðàþò 20 ïðîöåíòîâ
äîëè" - îòâåòèë ÿ.
îí ñäåëàë âèä êàê åñëè áû ýòî âîîáùå íè÷åãî
íå çíà÷èëî.
ïîñëå ÿ ïðèëîæèë âñå óñèëèÿ ÷òîá óäàëèòü åãî èç
ìîåé æèçíè.
ÿ çàÿâèë: "ÿ íå äåëàþ äâîéíûõ ñòàâîê, ýêñïðåññîâ íà ïåðâóþ
òðîéêó èëè íà ïåðâóþ äâîéêó."
âñ¸ ýòî áûëî áåñòîëêó: "êòî âàì íðàâèòñÿ
â ýòîì çàáåãå?" -
ïîâòîðèë îí.
"ìàòü òâîþ ..." - ñêàçàë ÿ.
ÿ ñâàëèë êîãäà îí ñâåðÿë
ïðîãðàììêó.

came up to me at the racetrack
and asked, “who do you
like?” and I answered,
“don’t you know that when you tell your
horse to somebody else that it never
runs?-
he acted as if he hadn’t
heard: “who do you like in the
exacta?
”“I don’t bet exactas,” I told
him.
“why?-
asked.
“because they take a 20 percent
cut,” I responded.
he acted as if that fact had nothing
to do with anything.
in a further effort to delete him from
my existence
I stated, “I don’t bet daily doubles,
parlays, quinellas or
trifectas.
it was useless: “who do you like
in this race?-
repeated.
“Your Mother’s Ass,”
I informed
him.
as he checked his program
I walked off.
