Полмесяца в море, время летит.
И вот навстречу попался кит.
«Все наверх!» – кричит капитан, –
«Парни, возьмём кита!»

Вельбот волны коснулся слегка,
А кит хвостом ему дал пинка,
Бок свой подставил гарпуну,
Метнулся – и в глубину.

У китобоя завет простой:
Видишь кита – шевелись, не стой!
Линь не руби – кит на лине,
Прячется он на дне!
ПРИПЕВ
Сорок дней средь мёртвых зыбей;
Туже линь и опять слабей;
Никак не вымотать нам кита –
Силища ещё та!

Пуст океан, куда взгляд ни кинь;
Не сдался кит, не обрублен линь;
А судовщик знай своё твердит:
Должен быть кит добыт!
