A. C. Пушкин-Я пережил свои желанья-English transl

Беляева Дина
Alexander Pushkin

***

I outlived my own yearnings,
I out loved my own dreams,
I’m left with dire anguish burning,
A sign of hollow heart within.

Under the spell of cruel fortune
My glory days have waned away
I live alone in gloomy torture
Awaiting for my final day.

Such as when chills of autumn heighten
While winter blizzards take their hold
Left on a barren branch forsaken
The last leaf shakes against the cold.

(1821)

***

Я пережил свои желанья,
Я разлюбил свои мечты;

(1821)

This is simply stunning! If Pushkin had written aught in English, this is how he would write!:)) I wonder, there can be no doubt that he was fluent in English and French. Did he ever attempt to compose any verses in these languages?
with bows of admiration,
Michael

Мге,
You are most kind. I’m terribly pleased to hear that compliment from you.
It is highly probable that Pushkin wrote in French. Although I never saw any references to poems, it is a well known fact that French was a language of choice for his personal correspondence. (As you may recall, his nickname in TS lyceum was “Frantszuz”, which he detested given Napoleonic invasion at the time.) There may be some epigrams or dedications in long lost personal albums of his friends and acquaintances.
There are no known references to anything written in English, though.
Cheers,
Dina

Dina, I do believe you deserve credit, for the feeling of Pushkin’s poems is retained in your translations. It is an immense gift to translate the works of verbal art, for in a process one creates a work of art as well, that may stand on its own. A poetic (not technical translation) entails the transference of the main gist, a theme or a feeling of the verse. Somehow you’ve managed to combine a direct and a poetic translation. It is truly amazing! I shall recommend your poems to my friend who is presently studying Russian.
As for Pushkin’s works, it seems that much of his work is yet unrevealed. His genius is akin to a great pyramid buried in sands of time. Who knows what further research of this giant among men, may uncover?
With best regards,
Mithrandir
