Сэр Уолтер Ралей (Рэли, Рейли) (1552-1618) - английский государственный деятель, путешественник, писатель. Происходил из знатного рода. Был приговорён к смерти, тринадцать лет просидел в крепости Тауэр и казнён из-за неудачного похода в Новый Свет и сражения, где был разбит испанцами. Был обвинен в заговоре против короля Якова I.
Считается, что данное стихотворение написано, а вернее переработано им накануне экзекуции. Взойдя на эшафот и взглянув на топор, он сказал: "Лекарство острое, но исцеляющее от всех болезней".
Sir Walter Raleigh (1552—1618 - a well known English aristocrat, statesman, soldier, explorer and writer. Originated from a wealthy family. He was sentenced to death, spent 13 years in Tower because of the unsatisfactory trip to the New World resulted in failure and defeat from spaniards. As well as of a plot against the throne. He is considered to have written or rewritten the poem “Conclusion” somewhere before his execution in 1618. According to many biographers he asked the executioners to see the axe and said: "This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all diseases and miseries."
