A match is a tool for starting a fire. Typically, matches are made of small wooden sticks or stiff paper. One end is coated with a material that can be ignited by friction generated by striking the match against a suitable surface.1] Wooden matches are packaged in matchboxes, and paper matches are partially cut into rows and stapled into matchbooks. The coated end of a match, known as the match "head", consists of a bead of active ingredients and binder, often colored for easier inspection. There are two main types of matches: safety matches, which can be struck only against a specially prepared surface, and strike-anywhere matches, for which any suitably frictional surface can be used.
Ein Streichholz oder Zue;ndholz, veraltet Schwefelholz, ist ein Staebchen zum Entfachen eines Feuers. Es besteht aus einem Schaft aus Holz, Pappe oder Papier, an dessen Ende ein Zuendkopf angebracht ist. Durch Reiben des Zuendkopfes an einer Reibflaeche entzuendet er sich und bringt das Streichholz zum Brennen.
Die ersten praktisch einsetzbaren Z;ndhoelzer kamen Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts auf den Markt. In der Anfangsphase waren sie unzuverlaessig, explosionstraechtig und enthielten sehr giftige Stoffe, insbesondere weissen Phosphor. Seit den 1850er Jahren gibt es die Sicherheitszuendhoelzer, so wie sie noch heute in Gebrauch sind.
Obwohl die Worte Streich- und Schwefelholz frueher haeufig synonym verwendet wurden, ist das Schwefelholz eigentlich ein Vorlaeufer des modernen Streichholzes. Es wird im Abschnitt Geschichte beschrieben.
