The autumn puts us on a lengthy trial,
exhausted by sincerity of summer.
False words, like leaves, are blown by
the rightful wind and swept aside.

They sentence with benevolence to death
here, condescend to petty sins of life,
consistently recover summer’s debts,
and prove its lust to be a lie.

And down the summer palaces they bring.
Transparent light – but not a velvet shadow –
I see a butterfly with a half-broken wing,
embracing a dry flower in the meadow.

They’re dead.
And, mercifully, wind
is bending them to earth,
where all’s eternal.
