Alexander Pushkin - Eugene Onegin - excerpt

Chapter VI
Stanza XXI

The poems are presented here;
I’ve got them now, so they can sing:
“Where have you gone and disappeared,
My precious youth, my golden days?
What coming day is bound to bring?
I vainly try to catch its face,
It hides in heavy murkiness.
No use in beating fatum law.
Shall I be pierced by a sudden woe,
Or will it miss your lucky hero,
All’s good: the wakeness and the sleep
Proceed in certain ordered ways;
Blessed is the time of daytime cares,
And blessed the dark that’ll grip our days!”
